I'm sure there are commercial software packages that do the same thing, but I'm not sure that any of them actually offer any more protection than multiple overwrites via Disk Utility. The more times it's overwritten, the less likely it can ever be recovered. Since some computer forensics tools can even restore data on disks that has been overwritten (because, I presume, some remnant of the magnetic state remains on the physical media), you can even choose to overwrite it multiple times. It will overwrite all of the data on the disk with zeros, at least once. The easiest way to do that on a Mac is to use Disk Utility and select the Erase option. This is why data recovery tools can restore "deleted" files - they are just rebuilding files from the "unwiped" data.įor the data to be permanently removed, it has to be overwritten. The whole point of an MDM is for management vs. Deleted files/data just removes the pointers to the data, it does not actually remove the data from the hard drive. For the data to be permanently removed, it has to be overwritten. The Mac does have remote control options, but the Mac sends a pop-up window when it is being remotely controlled. If you only delete data and files, you are not actually "wiping" your personal information.
